For the past several years people from various denominations and cities in Iowa have been working together to plan and participate in annual short-term missions trips to Puente de Amistad, Open Bible’s mission base in Tijuana, Mexico.

Jess and Jean Lindsay, Open Bible ministers and members of Church of the Open Bible in Iowa Falls, Iowa, are co-leaders (along with George and Terri Storm) of Spirit Midwest Ministries. Spirit Midwest Ministries is a faith-based organization that desires to unite people across denominational, social, economic, and generational lines to take the Gospel outside the walls of the church into the world. The partnership with Puente de Amistad was a natural expansion of the ministry. The February 2019 team included 21 people from various cities including Granger, Huxley, Des Moines, Perry, Grimes, and Iowa Falls, Iowa.

Back in 2010 the Spirit Midwest team built a house for one couple with whom they continued a relationship, Alexandro and Yadira, and their family. Alexandro and Yadira soon established their own group, Reconstruyendo un Hogar (Rebuilding a Home), to help others in need. In fact, this past February the couple joined the Spirit Midwest team to build a home for a lady named Aurora.

Unbeknownst to the team, God had given Aurora a dream that her house was going to be green and have a steel roof. A steel roof is not included in the Puente plans, but weeks before leaving for Tijuana the team decided they wanted to install a steel roof and raised the additional money needed to do so. Then when the painting crew started to paint the house, they grabbed the first paint they found in the truck, which happened to be pink, the color that was supposed to be used for the inside of the house. Marcial, the work foreman, went back to the base, picked up the first bucket of paint he found and brought it back. It happened to be green! When the team handed Aurora the keys to her new home during the house dedication, she told them about her dream.

Jess Lindsay is blessed with building skills and oversees the building crews. Jean promotes the group, encouraging new people to go each year to experience a different culture, discover their strengths, and determine whether God is leading them to international missions or stay-at-home missions. She said, “My goal is to see one newbie go with us each year – not just someone from our church.”
