Journey Church Des Moines Grand Opening

On October 16, 2016, Journey Church of the Open Bible, a church in the Des Moines metro area, celebrated the opening of its own building. During its first four years, Journey met in a movie theater on Sunday mornings. While this provided a neutral, “guest-friendly” environment for the new church, leaders sensed it was time to take their next step.

“For us, the move to our own facility wasn’t as much about having a building, but having a place – a place to help people take their next step toward Christ and a place that would serve as a base for reaching our community,” said Lead Pastor Darrick Young. “We believe God has brought us to a new place so we can impact our community at a greater level.”

The move also helps Journey overcome challenges faced by meeting in a theater, including unappealing spaces for children’s classes and a lack of space for connecting on Sundays. These issues were given priority in planning for a new location. The children’s wing has several brightly colored, age-appropriate rooms and is equipped with its own bathroom facilities. Since the wing can be closed off from the rest of the building, it provides a secure environment for the kids. Cameras installed in each classroom allow parents to check on their children from large monitors in the lounge, just outside the auditorium. The lounge is designed to encourage community building, a place for people to connect before and after service.

On the weekend after their grand opening, members held a fall event in their new facility for young families, hosting over 600 people in a two-hour period. “In the past we would do outreaches like this at various locations in our community and then invite guests to come visit our church,” Young said. “Now we are able to say, ‘Welcome to our church.’ It’s a great new day for us.”
