Ivan became licensed with Open Bible Churches in 1953 and pastored churches in Clive, Des Moines, Clarinda, and Waterloo, Iowa. In 1973 he was elected to serve as the Central Regional Superintendent, a position he held until his retirement in 1994. Concurrently he also served as the president of Open Bible College in Des Moines, Iowa, from 1973 to 1978. In 2011 when Ivan and his wife, Elsie, embraced universalism, a doctrine contrary to Open Bible Churches’ Statement of Faith and to Evangelical orthodoxy, the couple ceased their credentialed status with Open Bible. However, Ivan and Elsie maintained mutually warm and loving relationships with former Open Bible associates. Ivan also served many other offices, boards, and ministries throughout the community. He served as President of the Iowa Association of Evangelicals and Chairman of Christian Service Foundation. He remained active until his death with Good Report Ministries, which he founded and for which he served as president. Ivan was respected in the field of Jewish-Christian relations and was an emeritus member of the executive committee of the National Christian Leadership Conference for Israel. In recent years he also served as chaplain to three different retirement communities and as pastor of Cory Grove Community Church. Open Bible President Randall A. Bach said, “Ivan was an early ‘elevator’ person and sponsor for me. He gave me leadership opportunities at a very young age. I am not sure I would have entrusted me at that season of life like he did. He never ceased to believe in and graciously lavish me with affirmation until the end.” Ivan is survived by his cherished wife of 67 years, Elsie, their four children, nine grandchildren, and twenty great-grandchildren.
