Font Size » + | -Every Thursday since the beginning of October, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., DeLand Open Bible Church in DeLand, Florida, has hosted a live Facebook prayer time. During this hour, church members take prayer requests from Facebook or texts and pray for them right on the spot. The church’s pastor, Thomas (Tommy) Avinger, moderates the sessions. These mighty prayer warriors have prayed for requests from hundreds of people from across the U.S. Their theme verse is Acts 4:31: “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.” Pastor Tommy got the idea for the prayer event from Steven Dailey, a pastor out of Indianapolis. Before the church launched the ministry, they spent nine months in preparation. Pastor Avinger told his prayer team: “This ministry needs your war wounds, your battle scars. Since you’ve been through these battles, you now know how to pray.” “This ministry has changed the heart of our church,” Tommy says. “Our ministry may not be a big ministry, but we’re doing big things. Our goal is to get other churches doing similar prayer ministries. We would like to have every day of the week covered. Can you imagine what would happen in the Kingdom if we could get the Church praying every day? Jesus said, ‘Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father’ (John 14:12). With the potential through Facebook to reach millions of people, I believe this is one of those ‘greater works.’” If you are interested in hosting a Facebook Live Prayer event, Pastor Avinger would be happy to help you get started.
